Holy shit.
When I was a student at Cambridge I remember an anthropology professor holding up a picture of a bone with 28 incisions carved in it. “This is often considered to be man’s first attempt at a calendar,” she explained. She paused as we dutifully wrote this down. “My question to you is this – what man needs to mark 28 days? I would suggest to you that this is woman’s first attempt at a calendar.”
It was a moment that changed my life. In that second I stopped to question almost everything I had been taught about the past. How often had I overlooked women’s contributions? How often had I sped past them as I learned of male achievement and men’s place in the history books? Then I read Rosalind Miles’s book “The Women’s History of the World” (recently republished as “Who Cooked the Last Supper?”) and I knew I needed to look again. History is full of fabulous females who have been systematically ignored, forgotten or simply written out of the records. They’re not all saints, they’re not all geniuses, but they do deserve remembering.

Let me tell you some things about this bitch. This is a mantis shrimp. This thing is 6 - 12 inches and as you can see, it’s all colorful and shit. Mantis shrimp have 16 cones which means it has 13 more cones than humans. So these things can see things we don’t even know exist. They could see so many different colors and possibly could have different senses like when some animals can see heat. These bitches are pretty bad ass because their claws move so fast the water literally boils around it. They’re also so strong that aquariums aren’t usually allowed to have them because if they hit the glass it will shatter and it will eat all the other fish/snails. When the mantis shrimp strikes it’s food you can see light and steam being made from how fast it’s claws can move. The claws move as fast as a bullet being shot out of a 22 caliber rifle even though it’s underwater.
This is the only thing I’ve learned all year in biology and I thought it was cool.
